Curious Flora

In Curious Flora, each player chooses an explorer to investigate this small little town called Undermere. As you explore the town, you will discover the new area around it. Each time you enter a new area, you might find something unusual. You might encounter people from a different areas, and they will show their “kindness” to you.

What I did

Narrative Design

  • Background story of the game, including monsters, settings, and main storyline.

  • Encounters when the player reveals the final boss.

Game Mechanics Design

  • The player needs to reveal the map tiles to explore the world

  • The map is different for every games.

Map Design

  • Design the special effects of the map tiles

  • Playtest to ensure that the item they gain from the map is balanced.

Rules

  • Write the rule book for the game

  • Playtest the rules to ensure the players can understand it

Curious Flora is a 4 player tabletop card game. This is my first attempt of building a card-based TTRPG.

In this game, players need to explore the town as much as they can and collect flowers to make the explorer stronger. Some may find more useful tools as they fulfill requests from NPCs. The goal is to solve the puzzle and save the town.

The expected time for a game is around 1 hour.

You can download the game here.

Inspiration

Curious Flora is made based on the IP from Strange Horticulture. We use the idea of matching the mysterious plants with the description in the encyclopedia to find the true use of plants to form the basic mechanism of this game.

We went through 4 interations in total. Each time, we make the game better.
